my iphone is stuck in phone mode?

i downloaded the new 2.0.2 software onto my first gen iphone last night and it froze my iphone. so i reset it and it worked fine up until this morning. when i wake up the phone it goes directly to the phone section. if i hit the menu button is does nothing. it won't return to the home screen. i can access all my contacts and voicemail, even e-mail them and look up their address in the map feature. but it won't do anything else. it won't turn off, it only vibrates when i receive a call, and it lets me know when i have a new e-mail. but of course i can't actually access my e-mail because it just returns to the phone section. i'm at work so i can't plug it in and reset it again so i hoped there was something i could do without itunes access. i also hope this isn't a trend with the 2.0.2 update

1. hold the lock and the center home button till the apple logo appears this procedure will reset your iphone (no data will be erased or altered).
