Proximity sensor on my enV touch...?

This is the second enV touch ive gotten, and i really like the phone a lot. the problem with this one is that in the middle of a call i would like to be able to check the time and especially for my voicemail i would like to easily type in the password. the problem is that a couple seconds into a call the phone goes black. on the previous phone i had, the proximity sensor worked and when i moved the phone away from my face it would light up and i could easily look at the screen. the phone i have now doesnt do that, and i'm not sure how to fix it. looking through the "phone settings" "touch settings" and "call settings" doesnt work. Im not sure if resetting the software would fix the problem, but I'd rather not do that if its going to erase everything i currently have on the phone... i can open the keyboard and have the external screen light up that way, but its getting a little old
