Voicemail

Can anyone tell me how I can access my voicemail messages from a BT Response 160.?

If I don't switch my usual ansaphone on my messages apparently go to voicemail (which I didn't realise I'd got!) There's nothing in the instructions about retrieving messages. I've had this machine for years so don't know why I've suddenly been given a voicemail service when I'm not even with BT
