  1. RTFM!
  2. the 1040 is a 4 line phone that does not have a built in answering machine... so i believe that the question has to do with the voicemail provided by your telephone company... you would need to call your local telephone service provider to adjust the amount of time before the calls go to voicemail... or get at least 1 1080 which is compatible with the 1040 and has a built in call attendant, so it will answer all calls before they reach your telephone company voicemail... question... the box and manual claim this phone has CID, but i installed 2 of these 1040s for a customer a few months ago, and got a call back because the CID was not working, and going thru the menus, and researching online it appears that CID is not a feature on this phone... does the CID work for you?

  4. Simply put, how do you get to the voicemail? Is it in the phone? Then you need help with the phone. If you call your phone company to check the voicemail, and they are billing you for voicemail, then ask them how to choose the number of rings. You might be able to choose by logging into your accounts manager if they have one. :)
  5. Have you checked AT&T's customer support/service before resorting to Yahoo Answers? They can better help you than us here.
