What is the voicemail at mobile phones?

In My mobile I can call voicemail and put its number what does that mean

1. Voicemail is the ability to leave a message by talking into the mobile phone and it works like an answering machine service. The recipient will receive a notice indicating that they have a message, and it is in the form of a voice message where they can hear what message you left for them. I think what your MY MOBILE is trying to inform you is that you can put in your voicemail number which is your OWN phone number and then when your voicemail system comes up, you can just press # and then it will take you to your voicemail. Just enter your password and then you can hear voicemails from people who have left you messages.
2. c dear, as u know sms or email, its the same but in the form of audiable voice. Putting Voicemail number meant as every mobile service provider i mean any company dat provide wthr airtel,cellone,BSNL,Hutch etc have their own fixed voice mail number. jst call the customer care and ask for that number. Insert that number where they ask than YOU WILL BE ABLE TO RECIEVE VOICE MAILS AS some one is trying to call u whn ur phn is switched OFF thn your Voice mail service automatically activated and the caller can leave msg in his/her own voice which u can afterword listen it just by dialing voicemail number. charges is only for listening by dialing any voice mails and not for activating voicemail service.
