How long do you have to accept a job offer via voicemail?

I got a voicemail extending a job offer today, and I still have a second interview at another place Tuesday of next week, what should I do, and how long can I postpone this process? I would like to see where the second interview goes with the other job with better benefits. Thanks!

  1. I think you can easily tell them you would like to think about the offer, and could you get back to them by the end of next week. If they have a problem with that, you probably don't want to work there anyway. Hopefully at your interview on Tuesday, you can get a good sense for whether an offer is pending. Also, there's nothing wrong with telling a potential employer that another offer is out there. Sometimes it will encourage them to act faster (or even offer more money).
  2. I would wait and call after the interview from the other job. But as a common courtesy I would call the first place back within the next week.
  3. If they were willing to wait, the offer would have been by mail or email. A telephone call is still the most direct form of communication and an immediate response is expected. If you do not respond within twenty-four hours, they will probably offer it to their second choice. The better option would be to ask if the second interview can be moved up. Good Luck.
