Voicemail

What is a "telecommunications specialist" in the private sector of the NAVY?

In the job description it says: "Performs tasks concerned with the analyses and evaluation of the telecommunications functional, technical and operational requirements and problems. Provides administration of a Nortel Meridian 1 Option 11C PBX and Call Pilot voice mail systems. Utilizes knowledge of and experience with Tandberg VTC systems. Utilizes knowledge of Avaya S8710 Private Branch Exchange (PBX)/Telephone Communications system and an Intuity Audix voice mail system. Receives formal and on-the-job training." ...but I'm having trouble figuring out what those systems are. I have 12 years of telecommunications/radio experience, but not sure if they are talking about the same thing!! Please help!

  1. The are phone systems. They are looking for someone who can program them.. Tandberg is a video conferencing system. Intuity is an Avaya voicemail system. It would be hard and a lot of work to pick up all these systems from scratch. Most companies only use one (Avaya/Nortel/Cisco) Combining two opens a whole different can of worms... Do you know VOiP (Voice over IP) Avaya and Nortel can work together, but use different protocols.
  2. Telecommunications specialists coordinate the installation of computer-assisted engineering programs for schematic cabling projects; modeling programs for cellular and satellite systems; and programs for telephone options, such as voice mail, e-mail, and call waiting.systems and may provide follow-up maintenance and training.
