how do I stay connected to internet when connecting to a virtual private connection?

I have a cable connection so I am always connected through my desktop, however when I connect to my office virtual private connection, I get disconnected from my ISP until I disconnect from the VPN. I think there is some kind of configuration, but I just can’t find it. I have Windows 2000. I know I need to upgrade.

1. To connect your office using VPN, you are using dialup connection.
2. go to properties of VPN connection -> networking tab -> select TCP/IP properties -> click on advance -> uncheck "Use default gateway on remote network". Just make sure to update to hosts file with IP addresses of servers in your office. hosts will file at following location c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc. I think its WINNT for Windows 2000.
